Overview:

The School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to work on the FLEXNANOFLOW project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), the leading European funding body for blue-sky frontier research. This project will be carried out in the research group of Dr. Lorenzo Botto. The researcher will join a vibrant research team investigating the fluid mechanics of nanostructured materials (https://bottogroup.wordpress.com/), and benefit from the collaborative research and training activities organized by QMUL's Fluids Group: http://www.fluids.qmul.ac.uk/

The researcher will develop computational models of ultra-flexible nanomaterials in sheared liquids, using techniques borrowed from computational fluid and solid mechanics. The project will investigate the interplay between fluid flow, adhesion and elasticity in the nanomechanics of thin flexible 2D nanomaterials. The candidate will hold a PhD in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or related subjects, will have excellent code writing ability and will have a strong background in computational physics of fluids and/or solids (achieved using continuum, atomistic, or multiscale techniques). A solid knowledge of continuum mechanics and an interest in fluid-structure interaction problems at the nanoscale are essential. In addition to fluid or solid mechanicians, experts in computational aspects of adhesion, fracture phenomena and tribology are also invited to apply.

The post is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 12 months and is available from   11 April 2017. Starting salary will be £32405 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and defined benefit pension scheme.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
