Overview:

We are seeking to appoint a Joint Programme Lecturer to deliver and manage academic skills and personal development planning on the QMUL-Nanchang Joint Programme in Biomedical Sciences.  This includes teaching, planning and assessment of the academic skills components of the course for years 1 and 2 of the Biomedical Sciences degree, with delivery from both Nanchang in person during teaching visits and remotely from the UK. 

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is a Russell-group research-intensive University that delivers world class research and Higher Education in the UK and overseas.  The School of Biological & Chemical Sciences (SBCS) at QMUL runs a Joint Programme (JP) with Nanchang University, China in Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Medicine.  In this programme, students substitute nearly all of the first 3 years of their Nanchang undergraduate medical degree with a modified version of the QMUL BSc in Biomedical Sciences, that is taught in English in Nanchang, China, principally by UK academic faculty flying out to deliver the teaching in small discrete blocks of teaching.  We are seeking applications for a lecturer in academic skills and personal development planning who have some experience in teaching within a background of life sciences/medical education.  The post is within the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, a large and expanding academic unit, which provides a supportive and friendly environment that prides itself on its inclusivity of staff and students as well as research-lead innovative teaching throughout its educational programmes.

The JP curriculum was recently externally reviewed and we are incorporating new elements to the curriculum to further improve the student experience, as well as ensure we provide the strongest evidence-based educational background for future clinical doctors and medical researchers; this post is central to improving the curriculum.  Most of the formal lectures are delivered in Nanchang, although the successful applicant will be based on the Mile End campus when not abroad, with teaching carried out remotely as well.    Applicants should note that staff will not be travelling to China until UK government advice, QMUL and our insurers agree it is safe to do so. 

The Lecturer will also make significant contributions to student education and experience on the Nanchang JP through regular updating of taught material, assessments and timely and collegiate engagement across the entire JP.  The postholder will also be responsible for organizing and teaching on the annual short summer school in London for Year 2 students. The role requires carrying out significant Joint Programme administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of the JP.  

Applicants are expected to have advanced knowledge and experience in academic skills teaching.  Applicants should have an excellent academic background in scientific or pedagogical research with a PhD in Medical or Life Sciences.  Applicants should also be able to demonstrate some experience in teaching at least at undergraduate level.  An element of educational scholarship is also expected.

The post is a full time (Teaching & Scholarship) permanent appointment, with an expected start date of 1st March 2021 or as soon as   possible thereafter. The salary will be in Grade 5-6, in the range of £42,433 - £52,833 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
