About the Role
The aim of the project is to discover the molecular basis of novel phase transitions – from liquid or solid states to rotator phases – solid states with degrees of freedom. These have been implicated in the self-healing of biological systems and are the basis for the recently discovered phenomena of artificial morphogenesis from our lab. It also involves harnessing these transitions for applications – both within the framework of the project, as well longer term in a potential start-up that could be based on those technologies.
This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with approximately 70 academic staff and 45 postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. Circa 40 administrative and technical staff support the staff and students. The staff and student body are international in make-up. The School is partway through a refurbishment project that is upgrading research and teaching space. The School holds a departmental-level Bronze Athena SWAN award and is committed to equality of opportunity.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, fixed term appointment for 2 years, with an expected start date of October 2020. The starting salary will be Grade 4, in the range of £31,613 - £40,194 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
