About the role

The School of Engineering and Material Sciences at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on a Cancer Research UK (CRUK)-funded project entitled: “Organ-on-a-chip model to investigate breast cancer bone metastases”

This project will be carried out in the multidisciplinary groups of Professor Martin Knight and Dr Oliver Pearce. The project will be based in the new Queen-Mary & Emulate Organs-on-chips Centre within the School of Engineering and Materials Science and linked to Barts Cancer Institute in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The aim of this study is to develop an organ-on-a-chip model of bone metastasis in breast cancer and to use this to test the hypothesis that the interaction between cancer cells and osteocytes controls the metastatic niche and tumour development. We hypothesize that this process is regulated by physiological biomechanical loading of bone and osteocyte primary cilia. This will be achieved by developing a microfluidic organ-on-a-chip model which will then support future discovery science and drug development. The project is therefore part of an extensive partnership with the leading organ-on-a-chip company, Emulate Inc.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent and significant experience of cell culture, and associated techniques such as molecular biology and confocal microscopy. Experience of cancer cell biology, primary cilia, mechanobiology and in vitro models would be an advantage.

Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). All postdoctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

For further details of the role and selection criteria please refer to the job specification attached.

The post is a full time, fixed term appointment for 30 months and is available from 1st December 2020. The starting salary will be in the range of £31,623 - £34,220 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, occupational pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Martin Knight at or on +44 (0) 020 7882 8868.
