Applications are invited for the role of Research Assistant in the newly established Institute of Population Health Science.   IPHS is a world class, multidisciplinary grouping of academics.  Its focus is on population health sciences, spanning public and global health, health services research, health policy, genomics and data science, behavioral and social sciences.  IPHS delivers evidence to implement health system change for population benefit.

The Institute comprises four centres: Centre for Primary Care and Mental Health, Centre for Clinical Trials and Methodology, Centre for Global Public Health and Centre for Women’s Health.
The post will be based in the Centre for Primary Care and Mental Health, within the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry. The Unit conducts research on social interactions in mental health care, including developing and evaluating novel interventions, with a leading role in international collaborations. In 2012, the Unit has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre, the only one specifically for Mental Health Services Development in the world. The Unit is headed by Professor Stefan Priebe and located at the Newham Centre for Mental Health.

The post holder will have a central role within the ‘NIHR Global Health Research Group on Developing Psycho-Social Interventions for Mental Health Care at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry’. The Group started working on 1 August 2017 and is hosted in the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry. The post holder will support the project manager with coordinating the activities of the NIHR Global Health Research Group. The multi-disciplinary Group works with partners in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia and Uganda, and has recently been extended to Argentina, Pakistan and Peru. The aim of the group is to refine and test interventions that utilise existing resources in relationships, families and communities to help people with severe mental illnesses. Data has been collected in each country using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The post-holder will have a central role in the scientific and practical activities of the Group and work closely with its Director and the Project Manager. 

The successful candidate should hold a PhD and/or equivalent professional experience and a post-graduate degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience.  Experience in quantitative and/or qualitative research and evidence of an ability to communicate complex information effectively with a wide range of staff and partners are essential.
The post is a full time, fixed term contract for one year, with an expected start date of March 2020. Starting salary will be in the range of £38,084 - £44,807 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
