The School of Physics and Astronomy maintains a tradition of outstanding research in ground-breaking fields. This position is based in the Astronomy Unit, which hosts world leading research groups in cosmology, gravitation, planetary science, and space plasma physics.
The School is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cosmology to work with Drs Chris Clarkson, Philip Bull and Timothy Clifton on relativistic effects in large-scale structure. Applicants should have a strong research track record within cosmology or related fields, ideally in areas that involve simulations or analytic calculations of observable relativistic effects in structure formation. Applicants with experience working with large-scale structure simulations and/or data analysis, or survey forecasting, are also strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will develop theoretical tools and predictions for relativistic observables, and/or run and analyse relativistic N-body simulations with the aim of preparing the way for the detection of relativistic effects in upcoming large-scale structure surveys.
Candidates must have a PhD in Cosmology or equivalent, and already have research skills in some or all areas specified above. This post will involve contributing to relevant working groups of upcoming surveys, and close collaboration with researchers at the Centre for Radio Cosmology at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to make extended research visits if desired. Substantial travel funding and access to HPC facilities is also available.
The position is full-time and fixed-term for 3 years (subject to renewal after the second year), with an expected start date around October 2020. The starting salary will be in the range £31,613–£38,084 pa, inclusive of London Allowance, and benefits include 30 days annual leave, salary pension scheme, and interest-free season ticket loan.
