Queen Mary University of London is a leading university in the UK, with a breadth of excellence across Science and Engineering, Medicine, and Humanities and Social Sciences. This position is based in the Astronomy Unit within the School of Physics and Astronomy, which hosts world leading research groups in cosmology, gravitation, planetary science, and space plasma physics.
The School is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Radio Cosmology to work with Dr Phil Bull on the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA; reionization.org). Applicants should have a strong research track record within astronomy, cosmology, or related fields, ideally in areas that involve the development and application of statistical analysis techniques, high-performance computing, cosmological/instrumental simulations, and/or radio data analysis. The successful applicant will play a major role in analysing the HERA data. This will involve developing innovative statistical data analysis and/or simulation tools, and applying them to the large volume of data that we currently have available.
The successful applicant should have a PhD in astronomy, cosmology, or equivalent, and already have knowledge and research skills in some of the areas specified above. Experience in similar types of data analysis is desirable but not essential, and we will consider applicants with a broad range of skills. The successful applicant will be required to work effectively as part of a large international team, and will have the opportunity to visit other HERA partner institutions in the US and South Africa.
The position is full-time and fixed-term for a period of 3 years (subject to renewal after the second year), with an expected start date in October 2020. The starting salary will be in the range £33,324–£38,084 p.a. (inclusive of London Allowance), depending on experience. Substantial travel funding and access to high-performance computing facilities is also available to members of the research group.
