Applications are sought for a Chemistry Teaching Technician (CTT) to provide comprehensive technical support for practical teaching in the Department of Chemistry within the School of Biological & Chemical Science (SBCS). Chemistry at Queen Mary has a buoyant undergraduate population recruiting ~100 BSc/MSci students each year. The appointed person will work within our state-of-the-art chemistry teaching laboratories which were recently refurbished with a £5.1 million investment. This appointment will ensure that we continue to provide a gold standard student experience. Excellence in teaching in the department runs hand in hand with our research which was ranked 7th for outputs in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Providing exemplary technical support service for taught programmes
- Providing advice, training and trouble-shooting service to all users of the teaching laboratories
- Working with the School’s Health and Safety co-ordinators to maintain a positive safety culture in the Chemistry teaching laboratories
- Working as part of a mutually supportive technical team
- Supporting research and teaching needs more generally within the School, which may involve working in other laboratories
Candidates must have a BSc (or equivalent Qualification) in Chemistry / Chemical Sciences or extensive work experience in a related laboratory technician role. Applicants must also have relevant experience of laboratory-based teaching in higher or further education, as well as a good understanding of concepts in organic, inorganic and physical/theoretical chemistry.
Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of Health and Safety & COSHH regulations as well as having a proven ability to work unsupervised in a safe and effective manner.
The post is a full-time, permanent position with a salary of £27,742 - £34,220 per annum. Other benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and an interest-free season ticket loan. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin work January 2020.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
