About Queen Mary
At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
Our reformer heritage informs our conviction that great ideas can and should come from anywhere. It’s an approach that has brought results across the globe, from the communities of east London to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at Queen Mary
At Queen Mary, we recognise that true inclusivity requires sustained, proactive and hard work and we know there are areas where we have work to do. We are seeking to ‘hard wire’ inclusivity throughout all our policies and practices. We do not see this work as belonging to one team or unit, but rather as being embedded in all that we do.
About the Roles
Our commitment to inclusivity at Queen Mary is reflected in our investment in a number of dedicated roles across the institution. To enable the planning and delivery of our EDI objectives, our EDI team (based within the HR Department) works in partnership with EDI Faculty Officers in each of our three faculties.
The Head of EDI will take strategic ownership for the planning and delivery of key EDI objectives, ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded in the everyday activity of Queen Mary.
The EDI Faculty Officers will proactively advise and support the schools within their faculty to develop applications and action plans for external equality accreditations.
The EDI Adviser (Projects and Accreditations) will lead key EDI projects, including supporting and facilitating applications made by the University and its schools and institutes for recognised equality accreditations. In the first instance, the role holder will support the institutional Athena SWAN reaccreditation.
These roles require an excellent knowledge and understanding of issues of equality, diversity and inclusion. You will have the ability to build networks and positively influence academic and professional services staff. Experience of working in an equality and diversity or accreditation environment and of planning, managing and delivering projects/tasks from initiation to completion is essential.
In return, we offer 30 days’ leave per annum, access to a generous pension scheme, a season ticket loan scheme and competitive salaries. We also offer enhanced family friendly leave, and an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus. You will work with a friendly and dedicated team, with access to personal development opportunities.
These posts are based at our Mile End campus. The Head of EDI is offered on a full time basis. The Faculty Officers and EDI Adviser are offered 0.8-1FTE.
The starting salary will be within the specified range, depending on experience.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
Queen Mary is committed to celebrating our diverse and inclusive community – a place where we can all be ourselves. We promote equality of opportunity for all – we are a Stonewall Diversity Champion and hold an institutional Athena Swan Silver award. We offer a range of family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, campus facilities and services to support staff from different backgrounds. Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit, we particularly welcome candidates from groups currently under-represented at this level in our workforce.
