The School of History at QMUL is entering a period of expansion in student numbers, and is taking steps to ensure that it has adequate resource to support its 700+ students and 78 staff, whilst continuing to offer its large and diverse portfolio of programmes and modules.  This role will work closely with the Director of Administration and will be a key member of the Senior Management Team. The post holder will contribute, technical, expert, evidence based recommendations based on auditable data analyses – chiefly, financial (student fee and research income) and HR related – to inform local operational capacity plans and process reviews, aimed to continually improve the School’s performance.

The post holder’s specific responsibilities include managing and contributing to the strategic development of the School’s HR, Finance and Research Management functions to ensure these core services run efficiently in a climate of recurrent change. S/he will be accountable for day to day operational activities, short and midterm planning (1- 5 years) of the School’s income streams and governance of post award research grants, to ensure that it is operating within its budget and maximising its income.  S/he will be responsible for managing and communicating HR processes (academic and non-academic) to School staff and for promoting and sustaining a culture of inclusion, fair practice and continuous staff development. S/he will also be responsible for the Health and Safety requirements for the School and for its space needs.

The post holder will supervise the Research Manager (local, day to day), and will direct and oversee the financial and Health and Safety duties folded into the Student Support Officer’s role.  S/he will also deputise for the Director of Administration in relation to Finance, Research and general administration, including project and process reviews and HR activities. S/he will exercise leadership, judgement and initiative in all aspects of the School’s management representing and promoting at all levels, a positive, assertive and professional image of the School across all its audiences.

The post is full time, fixed term, starting from 19st November 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.  The post is at Grade 5 on the University’s pay scales, with a starting salary of between £37,411 and £44,015 inclusive of London Allowance.  Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
