(Senior) Clinical Trials Applications Developer

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced (Senior) Database/Web Applications Developer with skills in system administration to join our team of highly motivated Database development and Data Management staff in supporting a growing portfolio of clinical trials in important priority areas for the NHS.

The post is being offered at both Grade 4 and Grade 5 (senior) depending on experience and seniority.  Job descriptions for both grades are attached.

The focus of the role will be to lead in the design, development, maintenance and support of new and existing database applications for clinical research, using the latest Web-development technologies (including Java, PHP and Python-based technologies with MySQL, Postgres and Oracle). It will also involve some system administration and maintenance activities for some of the dedicated Web servers and applications supporting clinical research, working in liaison with our central IT teams.

A degree in computer science or related fields plus substantial experience in database and Web development across the life cycle is essential. Also among the essential requirements are in-depth knowledge and programming experience with latest Web-based technologies including PHP, Python and Java, SQL, MySQL and Postgres; as well as project management skills and excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience of administering/maintaining Web servers and deploying Web applications will also be required for the role. Previous line management experience would be an advantage. Depending on experience, appointments will be made at Senior Clinical Trials Applications Developer OR Clinical Trials Applications Developer level.

The Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit (PCTU) is a fully registered UKCRC trials unit based within a large and vibrant Centre for Primary Care and Public Health and linked with the Centre for Psychiatry, where staff engage in a wide range of applied health research, providing a stimulating work environment. The PCTU leads and supports clinical trials in which the primary question of interest relates to intervention effectiveness: whether an intervention works under real-life conditions. It also carries out and supports pilot studies for these trials. The unit focuses particularly on trials of complex interventions.

The post is a full time, fixed term appointment for 36 months, starting as soon as possible.  Starting salary will be in the range £33,615 to £39,482 per annum for the Grade 4 post and £37,411 - £44,015 per annum for the more senior Grade 5 post – both inclusive of London Allowance.  Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
