Overview:

The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is an exciting and dynamic environment.  We have a research portfolio of £42m and in REF2014, 91% of our Computer Science submitted outputs were rated 3* or 4*, with 99% for Electronic Engineering.  

 

We are currently looking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer who will provide teaching and ongoing research in the area of Applied Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning, as well as to be a member of the QMUL Institute of Coding (IoC) team.

 

To apply, you should have a PhD or equivalent professional experience and have evidence of ongoing research activity at a high level within this research area. It is also essential that you have substantial experience (preferably with hands-on experience) in at least two of the following areas as you must be able to assume a standard academic teaching workload in these subjects: data science; data analytics; data mining; big data processing; artificial intelligence; machine learning.

 

You should be able to demonstrate the ability to teach at any level within the area of expertise, and across a range of computer science and electronic engineering subjects at a more introductory level, as well as to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in the process of teaching.

 

A successful applicant at Lecturer level will be making significant research contributions and will be able to demonstrate exceptional potential for achieving research excellence.  At Senior Lecturer level, successful applicants will have an excellent research profile and a strong track record of independent research as evidenced, for example, by successful PhD supervision, substantial external research funding, and/or a sustained publication record of well cited papers.

 

In addition to your lecturing duties, this post will also be heavily involved with The Institute of Coding (IoC) which is a new, exciting, national initiative that brings together a range of universities, industry, training providers and professional bodies to develop and deliver accredited degree schemes and short courses aimed at professionals in a wide range of sectors.  The IoC also works to widen the participation of women, returners to work and hard to reach groups.  You will therefore be expected to contribute to all aspects of the QMUL IoC work, which may include pedagogical-related research and investigation, curriculum development, teaching delivery and assessment, and course management at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels. You may also be expected to engage actively with industry and other external organisations to achieve the aims of the IoC, e.g. through delivery of industry-facing provision and CPD. In addition to the IoC work being carried out at QMUL, you will also be expected to contribute to the broader aims and work of the IoC as a whole, e.g. through contribution to the Widening Participation theme which QMUL is leading; organisation of / participation in related committees, working groups, meetings, workshops and events; and related professional development and scholarly activities.

 

The post is full time and permanent, and is available from August 2018.  The successful candidate must be able to start no later than 17 September 2018.  For an appointment at Lecturer level, the starting salary will be in the range of £40,865 - £50,881 inclusive of London Allowance; for Senior Lecturer level, starting salary will be in the range of £53,777 - £60,109.
