The School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in the structural, electrical and mechanical characterisation of large-area tailored graphene grown by a new method.

Graphene has been called a wonder material because of its remarkable properties. However, graphene cannot yet be used in most electronic applications because the large-area graphene required is currently contaminated by the metal catalyst on which it is grown. In addition, a manual transfer process is required onto the substrate of choice.The large-area tailored graphene the PDRA will characterise is free from metallic contamination and deposited directly onto silicon, for example, with no transfer processes. It has great potential for a wide range of electronic and energy generation applications. Of particular importance is the structure and bonding of the graphene/silicon interface and the structure of the grain boundaries in the graphene.  A particular application this project will explore is the potential of our tailored graphene as an ITO (indium tin oxide) replacement

The candidate will hold a PhD in materials science, physics or chemistry or equivalent experience, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. The project involves extensive experimental work using a number of advanced characterisation instruments such as photoelectron spectroscopies, scanning probe microscopies, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and nanomechanical analysis for the determination of the graphene/silicon interface structure and bonding, and for the structure and bonding of grain boundaries in the graphene. The project also involves measuring the strength of the graphene adhesion to the silicon, and measuring the conductivity of the graphene as a function of the grain size, etc. Previous experience of working with graphene is desirable, but not essential. The candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team. The project will be co-supervised by Professor Sir Colin Humphreys and Dr Oliver Fenwick.

The post is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 3 years. The starting date is 14 May 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary range is £32093 - £36677 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and defined benefit pension scheme.

The position is open to international applicants. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.
