The School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to work on a multi-partner EPSRC funded project “National Centre for Nuclear Robotics (NCNR)”. The QMUL element of this project will be carried out in the research group of Professor Kaspar Althoefer.

The National Centre for Nuclear Robotics aims to create robotics solutions for cleaning up the UK’s 4.9million tonnes of legacy nuclear waste is the largest and most complex environmental remediation task in the whole of Europe. Many of the materials, e.g., those that are alpha-contaminated, are too hazardous and potentially harmful for humans even when protected by air-fed plastic suits, and, hence, advanced robot behaviours/capabilities are needed to reduce or even eliminate the need for human worker entries. In high gamma environments, human entries are impossible, and electronics are also vulnerable.

The QMUL strand of the NCNR project has three main objectives:

1) Vision related sensing and perception

2) Tactile and force sensing for advanced robot object manipulation and handling

3) Novel, deployable robot structures: design, fabrication and control

The focus of this post will be on “3) Novel, deployable robot structures: design, fabrication and control”.

In the context of this research focus the PDRA will strongly contribute to the development and benchmarking of novel deployable robot structures, capable of conducting waste management and decommissioning tasks in the extreme environment of the nuclear industry. This will involve the design and fabrication of such structures as well as the development of appropriate control strategies.

The post is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension of up to 1 year, and is available from 1st of February 2018. Starting salary will be £36,677 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Kaspar Althoefer at or on +44 (0) 020 7882 3419.
