The Centre for Experimental Medicine & Rheumatology (EMR) at the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI), Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) opened in May 2007 and is led by Professor Costantino Pitzalis. EMR rapidly became a leading national and international rheumatology centre of excellence and in 2012 it was awarded the status of Arthritis Research UK Experimental Arthritis Treatment Centre. The Centre is focused on the development of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic approaches to inflammatory and degenerative arthropathies, particularly rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. The emphasis is on translational research by combining strengths and expertise of basic and clinician scientists working together.
The Centre offers newly refurbished laboratories, cutting edge facilities and is located in the heart of the City of London in close proximity to the Barbican Arts and Music Centre. The Centre is integral part of the Department of Rheumatology that includes 17 Consultant Rheumatologists and 3 General Physicians at Barts Health (BH) NHS Trust. BH is the largest Trust in England serving a population of 2.5 million in East London and beyond.
We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow at SpR / Lecturer level to join a 60 strong research team of Scientists, Clinicians and Clinical Trial staff dedicated to Inflammation and Rheumatology Research with the scope of helping deliver an exciting new digital health programme focused on the development of patient self monitoring and decision support networks for patients with RA. This post is linked to the award of the PAMBAYESIAN project grant (http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~norman/projects/PAMBAYESIAN/) from the EPSRC (https://www.epsrc.ac.uk) and will be focused on the delivery of the musculoskeletal case study described within this grant. A clinical fellow keen on developing a specialist interest in rheumatoid arthritis (and related specialisms such as MSK ultrasound, synovial pathology and biologic therapy) and happy to work with computer scientists to develop the artificial intelligence networks required for timely delivery of this project is essential.
The post-holder will be expected to undertake one clinical programmed activity per week on behalf of the Trust, (the timing and nature of these may be negotiated but is likely to include training in MSK ultrasound/intervention, specialist early arthritis/biologics clinics) in order to maintain clinical rheumatological training and to develop expertise related to the digital health project. However the majority of the post will relate to research linked to the programme.
Applicants should have an undergraduate medical degree and postgraduate degree and/or relevant professional qualification and/or equivalent professional experience at SpR level. During the tenure of the post the fellow would be expected to undertake a higher degree (PhD/MD).
The post will be based at Charterhouse Square (QMUL) and Mile End Hospital (BH), although the candidate may be required to move to another of the School/Trust’s sites should the need arise.
This is a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term appointment initially for 24 months with possibility of extension after this period to 36 months if PhD undertaken. Salary will be £36,675 per annum plus £1,470 London Allowance.
