The Systems Administrator role is to provide support for the operating systems and applications running on the Research IT facilities. This covers the High Performance Compute cluster, and various hosted services and virtual machines. Most of these servers run a variant of RHEL. The post holder is required to possess substantial knowledge and experience of supporting large installations of Linux servers in an academic/enterprise environment. Demonstrable experience of managing a job scheduler on a shared High Performance Compute Cluster would be an advantage.
The Systems Administrator for Research IT will primarily be involved with the understanding, application and dissemination of cutting edge technologies and innovative solutions to the world-class research being performed across all three Faculties of QMUL
The Systems Administrator for Research IT will work to understand the Research IT needs of academics, and assist in the design and delivery of a robust and dependable service based on these requirements. A good background in administering Linux servers, scripting and programming will be essential. However, due to the leading edge nature of the subjects being taught at QMUL, it is expected that the Systems Administrator for Research IT will learn and adopt new and emerging technologies (languages, applications and frameworks). An essential prerequisite for this candidate is a keen interest in new computational methods, and the ability to quickly and confidently learn and put into practice new computing skills.
The Systems Administrator for Research IT will also support key research applications which are used widely across the College, such as Matlab, Ansys, and many open-source applications. The Systems Administrator for Research-IT will be required to install and benchmark these applications, as well as provide support to users.

The post is full time. Starting salary will be in the range £36,677-£43,152 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
