The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics, and is currently organised into seven research groups, namely: Algebra, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis, Probability and Applications, Statistics and Data Analysis. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes.

About the role

We are looking to appoint a Research Assistant to work in the area of numerical general relativity beyond astrophysics within the General Relativity group, which is part of the Geometry and Analysis Research Group at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London. A strong background in numerical general relativity and high performance computing is essential. The research activity of the successful candidate will focus on the study of the dynamics gravity and black holes in anti-de Sitter spaces, with an emphasis on applications to holography in a broad sense. The group has strong links with the String Theory group at Queen Mary University of London and other research institutions in the area such as Imperial College London, King’s College London and the University of Cambridge. 

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to conduct high quality research and code development with the supervision of senior members of the group as well as being able to work autonomously. The successful candidate must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts.

Pay & Benefits

The post is a full time, fixed term appointment for 1 year, with an expected start date of 1st October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting salary will be £30,445 - £32,093 per annum depending on experience, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and excellent travel and computing resources.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
