Overview:

The School of Business and Management (SBM) seeks to recruit an outstanding educator to a lectureship or senior lectureship in management practice. This is a Teaching and Scholarship focused position, which offers an exceptional opportunity for a passionate teacher and educational leader to shape the student skills and employability agenda of our rapidly growing and distinctive management school. Applicants for the senior lectureship will be established academics with strong teaching and educational leadership records, while applicants for the lectureship will be at least at post-doctoral level.

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL)

QMUL has been recognised as a top 100 university in the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, and placed 9th in the UK among multi-faculty institutions in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. It is the fourth largest college in the University of London and is growing rapidly through sustained investments in facilities on one of London’s largest campuses (Mile End), excellent research and improving the student experience. QMUL is a highly internationalised university, but with deep roots and continuing engagement with East London communities.

School of Business and Management

The School has been undergoing a period of rapid growth, doubling our number of academic staff over the last five years. We presently have around 80 academic staff, with more appointments in process. We have over 900 undergraduate Business Studies students plus approximately 600 students taking business in combination with other degree subjects within QMUL. At the post-graduate level we have around 500 MSc students and a well-established doctoral programme of 58 doctoral students.

We are a distinctive School that takes a humanities and social science led approach to our scholarship. We are a non-departmentalised school within QMUL’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), with its traditional strengths as a site of critical thinking in the humanities, law, history, geography and politics.

SBM recently re-committed to our core purpose, that is, to promote social justice, sustainability and good governance in the management of private, public and voluntary organisations through our research and education. We organise our activities thematically, cross-cutting traditional divisions between disciplinary departments.

Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Management Practice

The successful candidate should be able to contribute to, and lead, teaching on our MSc and undergraduate programmes. The precise area of teaching focus will be negotiated based on the candidate’s expertise, but is likely to include areas such as mentoring and coaching, entrepreneurial learning, leadership, business plans and/or business incubators and start-ups. The post holder will be asked to undertake a significant leadership role in teaching and learning. We currently have a particular need for leadership of the school’s student skills and employability agenda.

Candidates for the lectureship should have a completed doctorate (or have a doctorate under examination) by September 2017 and be able to demonstrate the capacity for excellent teaching in a UK university context. For the senior lectureship the successful applicant will already be an established academic and be expected to have a strong teaching leadership record. An experience of, and willingness to undertake administrative roles is essential at the senior lecturer level.

Colleagues on Teaching and Scholarship (T&S) contracts have access to a full range of professional development support, including an annual allowance to support their scholarship or pedagogical activities. Queen Mary recently revised the college’s promotion guidelines to provide comprehensive and clear promotion routes for T&S staff up to and including the academic rank of professor.

The post is full time and permanent. Applicants who wish to be considered for a job-share arrangement or for flexible working are welcome. The School is proud of its long-standing commitment to diversity and equality, and will be applying for an Athena Swan award in April 2017 in recognition of this. Queen Mary is committed to improving the gender and cultural diversity of its workforce and welcomes applicants from all sections of the community.

Starting salary will be in the range £40,182 - £50,030 / £52,878 – £59,104 per annum inclusive of London Allowance and include 30 days annual leave, USS pension scheme membership, and interest-free travel season ticket loan.

Your application should include a CV plus evidence of your teaching (for example recent evaluations and teaching awards or other recognition). As part of the selection process you will be asked to give a short presentation to members of the School, details of which will be provided if you are shortlisted.  The post is available any time after 1st September 2017.
