Recruitment of Council Members
Queen Mary is a leading University with a difference — one that opens the doors of opportunity to anyone with the potential to succeed. Throughout our history we have fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. We continue to live and breathe this spirit today for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
Our world-leading research and education are embedded in the communities we serve. We are dedicated to the public good, to generating new and challenging existing knowledge, and to engaging locally, nationally and internationally to create a better world. Our unparalleled diversity and track record in addressing inequalities puts us in a unique position among world-leading research-intensive universities to respond to the challenges facing the world today.
We are currently seeking up to four outstanding individuals to join our Council as trustees, starting in September 2021 or January 2022, as some of our current trustees reach the end of their full term of office. Council’s formal role is to constructively challenge the senior executive team in relation to our Strategy, the way we use public funds, manage our finances, and comply with our statutory obligations. Our trustees also share our passion for our mission and values, and are committed to supporting and promoting the University. This is a fascinating time to join as we deliver our 2030 Strategy to become the most inclusive university of its kind and respond to the pandemic and changes in higher education.
At Queen Mary we embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do. Council is no exception, with its diverse membership and wealth of executive and non-executive experience from across a range of sectors. We encourage applications from individuals outside the university sector who have existing board-level experience, or are ready to take this step. In particular, we are seeking executive and thought leaders in:
- finance and financial services;
- human resources and people strategy;
- pre-university education and skills;
- community engagement;
- health innovation.
Council meets five times each year, usually towards the end of the working day. Trustees are also expected to join one of our standing committees, which meet four or five times each year. The overall time commitment is typically one day a month. Meetings are currently being held remotely, but as restrictions are lifted we will move to a mixture of remote and in-person meetings at our campuses in east London. Trustee positions are not remunerated, but trustees are encouraged to reclaim all travelling and similar expenses incurred in the course of University business.

To apply, please send a short CV and covering letter addressing your motivation, suitability and availability to become a trustee at Queen Mary to Jonathan Morgan, University Secretary, at firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 2 August 2021.
