About us

The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of five in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and is structured around 4 research groups, covering theoretical physics, high energy particle physics, astronomy, and condensed matter physics.  We have approximately 460 undergraduate students, 35 postgraduate taught students and 100 PhD students together with a lively student society, PsiStar.

 

About the role

Applications are invited for a Research Manager to deliver effective management of all research activities requiring support, including the development and implementation of the research and impact strategy in the School.

The Post holder will:

  • Facilitate research grant applications which includes:
  • Monitoring and identifying opportunities which are relevant to research carried out by individuals in the School
  • Providing advice on costings (together with colleagues in the Joint Research Management Office) and terms and conditions, and completing standard parts of proposals
  • Coordinate the peer review of applications
  • Support academics in developing impact outcomes and case studies
  • Provide support in forging and maintaining industrial collaborations
  • Oversee the delivery of high level professional support in the administration of all aspects of the School’s postgraduate research programme
  • Line manage the PGR Programmes Officer.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in supporting research grant administration and/or impact in a higher education institution or research body and experience with advising on or writing research bids.  They will also have a good understanding of REF and other research quality measures.  Applications are also welcome for those who have experience and a level of experience in most areas of the role and could undertake the role as a development opportunity to become fully competent in all areas within 18 months maximum. Pay & Benefits

The post is full-time and permanent. Starting salary for candidates who can undertake the full remit of the role with minimal support will be in the range £36,677 - £43,152 per annum, those requiring development will be offered a salary starting of at least £32,956. Other benefits include 30 days annual leave, childcare vouchers scheme, defined benefit pension scheme and interest free season ticket loan. 

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
