The School of English and Drama at Queen Mary University of London wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA), funded by the Modern Humanities Research Association, to work on an edition of the works of Geoffrey Chaucer. The PDRA will work under the guidance of Professor Julia Boffey.
The post is for research assistance with the final stages of preparing material for a new edition of the works of Chaucer, to be published by Cambridge University Press. The edition is collaborative, involving contributions from a team of twenty-five contributors working under the guidance of two general editors, and will appear in two parts: a scholarly edition and a student edition. As one of the general editors, Professor Boffey will in 2021-22 oversee the collation of all parts of the edition.
The PDRA will provide research assistance with various tasks to ensure the timely and efficient delivery of materials to the publisher. The work will include collating submissions from contributing editors, checking the completed texts and apparatus, following up on queries identified in the checking process, organizing the bibliography, contributing to the introductory material, and checking all parts of the work for accuracy and consistency.
One essential pre-requisite is a knowledge of Chaucer’s works and the wider field of Middle English literature. Some understanding of the practices and conventions of editing is highly desirable. Experience of working with Middle English manuscripts, and some understanding of Latin, are also desirable.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area which will have been awarded before the start of the role. Relevant subject areas include but are not limited to: Middle English literature, textual editing, Middle English manuscripts and codicology.
