A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Dr Isabelle Mareschal’s group, to work on the MRC funded project “Understanding individual differences in facial emotion perception and their association with psychiatric risk indicators”. The position is part of a multi-site project with the University of Bath (Prof Cosker, Computer Science) and UCL (Prof Viding, Psychology).
The post-holder will conduct research into emotion perception using new research tools developed in conjunction with the computer graphics team in Bath to examine individual differences in emotion recognition. The successful candidate will lead the behavioural testing and will be based at QMUL but will collaborate with the team at Bath and UCL, with multiple cross site visits planned throughout the project. You will be expected to contribute to experimental design, stimulus and experimental software generation, running experiments, analysing results and writing conference presentations and research papers.
The successful candidate should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science or a related field. You should be able to provide evidence of expertise in behavioural testing or emotion recognition and have some computing or programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python). You must have experience with visual psychophysics and statistical techniques, as well as a proven record of high quality published research. Self-motivation, an ability to work as part of a team and excellent research management and presentation skills are essential.
At QMUL, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers. We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
The post is based at the Mile End campus in London (with remote working available). It is full-time and fixed-term for a minimum of 12 months (with a possibility of an extension thereafter). The successful candidate should be able to start by Jan 2022, with some flexibility to start earlier. The salary will be Grade 4-5, in the range of £33,324 - £36,098 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
We offer a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for fixed-term), season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. We also offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements and an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability.
