About the Role

Applications are invited for a full time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to build an instrument combining an optical imaging technique with a scanning probe technique funded through EPSRC under the supervision of Prof Steffi Krause (QMUL) and Dr Andrew Shevchuk (Imperial College).

About You

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, chemistry or electronics and have experience in instrument and software development. The candidate will work with two research groups with strong track records in the development of instrumentation for electrochemical imaging. The candidate will build a new setup that integrates the photo-electrochemical imaging technique LAPS with the scanning probe technique SICM and write a LabView program for controlling the imaging and data acquisition functions of the instrument. They will validate the instrument with the imaging of in-vitro cell models.

About the Project

In this exciting multidisciplinary project, light-addressable potentiometric sensors (LAPS) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) will be combined for the first time to create a novel instrument suitable for functional electrochemical imaging on both sides of a layer of cells. The release of reagents locally on the apical side while continuously imaging ion concentrations and cell charge basally will provide us with new insights into the transport mechanisms through tissues and contribute to the understanding of physiological processes and disease mechanisms.
