About the Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position, to work on a research project funded by the European Research Council, led by Dr Julien Gautrot.

Biointerfaces play an essential role in the field of biomedical engineering, in particular for the control of cell adhesion, proliferation and fate decision. In addition to biochemical cues directing cell phenotype, the physical properties of the cell microenvironment modulate such behaviour. This project aims to develop and characterise novel hydrogels with controlled nanoscale mechanics and viscoelastic properties, able to regulate cell adhesion and phenotype in 3D biomaterials for applications in stem cell technologies.

The applicant will design and synthesise polymers and hydrogels displaying controlled mechanical properties at different length scales and characterise their morphology and mechanical properties by electron microscopy, rheology and AFM indentation. The project will establish structure-property relationships between polymer design, nanoscale morphology and mechanics, and stem cell phenotype within corresponding 3D materials.

Our research group has a strong track-record in the field of materials science, biomaterials science and stem cell technologies (see Chem. Rev. 2014, ACS Nano 2018, Nano Lett. 2018 and 2014, Nature Materials 2012, Nature Cell Biology 2010). See our webpage ( for further details. The successful candidate will join our multidisciplinary team and build a strong expertise in the synthesis and design of hydrogels, their characterisation and application for stem cell technologies.

About You

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent subjects and/or equivalent professional experience in Soft Mater Chemistry and/or self-assembly. Experience in the fields of soft matter chemistry and mechanics, self-assembly and biointerfaces, is particularly desirable.

About the School

This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. These are supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The staff and student body are international in make-up.

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme, staff networks and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time/fixed term appointment for 2.5 years, with an expected start date of 1st November. The starting salary will be Grade 4, in the range of £32,087 - £38,655 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
