About the Role
Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on a research project funded by the EPSRC project “ESTEEM – sustainable manufacturing for future composites”, within the group of Dr Han Zhang.
The position is supported by a three-year EPSRC funded project, in collaboration with MIT (US), University of Warwick, ELG Carbon Fibre Ltd. and LMK Thermosafe Ltd., to develop a universal solution to achieve energy efficient and intrinsically safe manufacturing based on sustainable materials for advanced composite systems. Integrated self-regulating heating and self-sensing capabilities will be achieved from this project for future smart lightweight structural applications.
Applicants should hold a PhD, or equivalent research experience. You should have knowledge and experience in composite manufacturing, polymer and (nano) composite processing (melt- and solution-processing), conductive polymer composites, standard characterisation technique for polymers and composites. Experience in positive temperature coefficient effects, smart composite materials and damage sensing/detection in composites is also desirable. Applicants should be self-motivated and possess an ability to work independently and manage work timescales.
About the School
This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. These are supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The staff and student body are international in make-up.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, with an expected start date of Sept/Oct 2021. The initial term will be 1 year, with the potential to extend the appointment for up to 3 years (the project duration). The starting salary will be Grade 4, in the range of £34,220 - £40,194 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
