Centre of the Cell is an informal biomedical science education centre and outreach project located in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets. It is the first science education centre in the world to be located within medical research laboratories, part of Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London.

We have two unique learning spaces embedded within the Blizard Institute: our award-winning digital interactive STEM Pod launched in September 2009; and Neuron Pod, a dedicated learning space used to deliver our onsite workshops and shows.

We seek to have a positive impact on the educational, career and health choices of the children, young people and families we work with.

Applications are invited for the post of Aldgate and Allhallows Learning Officer at Centre of the Cell. The postholder will be responsible for delivering Centre of the Cell’s core programmes to school-aged students – coordinating our Youth Membership Scheme, delivering our science shows and workshops, and supervising our team of medical student explainers and STEM ambassadors. Responsibilities also include developing new learning activities, and working on various public engagement projects with researchers in other university teams.

Candidates must have relevant experience working in informal science learning, in a public facing role, and in developing educational resources. You must also have experience managing projects, be able to organise a varied workload, and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of organisations, groups and individuals. Excellent presentation and communications skills are essential. Candidates must be willing to be flexible on hours of work on a regular basis.

The post is full-time, fixed term appointment for 12 months and is maternity cover for our Learning and Outreach Officer, starting as soon as possible. Salary will be £27,742 inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
