About the Role

This a key role within the Hybrid platforms team, part of the Platforms and service delivery group, which is instrumental in the overall architecture, design and technical support of mission critical enterprise database services based on Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. As role holder you will help develop the use of public cloud database technologies in the imminent future.

 

The role will be supplemented by a managed service provider who will act as a technical escalation point, cover when you are on leave, and provide additional 3rd line level resource capacity within the team. It is envisioned that you will have a big say in what this managed service looks, have input into the selection process for supplier, and define the working relationship we have with them.


Reporting to the Hybrid platforms manager, you will proactively take the lead in developing the current database strategy to ensure on-going technical support, enhancement, performance and security of enterprise application databases and data warehouses. Aligning our database strategy with a cloud first approach to infrastructure will be a critical element of this role

 

About You

 

This is a challenging and important position for a highly organised, logical, self-starter, with excellent communications skills, and attention to detail, who is able to optimise the use and development of specialist software and services. The successful candidate will be expected to troubleshoot complex technical issues, maintain and develop scripts, tools and business processes, and work alongside a team of specialists entrusted to deliver high quality, robust, resilient, responsive and secure University wide services.

 

Experience

  • High level of expertise as a Senior DBA (from a Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle background), in the implementation, management and development of database services and data warehouses to support business and organisational activities.
  • Proven experience in leading in the delivery of a high-quality customer-focused service and providing focused, reliable and resilient enterprise solutions to meet both customer and business requirements.
  • Experience of running databases in a public cloud environment is desirable.
  • Experience of working with Managed service providers is desirable.

 

Communication

  • As a Senior DBA you will be a self-motivated individual who is able to challenge and influence others in the provision of innovative and cost-effective solutions
  • High level, proven inter-personal and communications skills and have the ability to transfer knowledge to others, and
  • Proven experience of engaging with a broad range of stakeholders to ensure a continual improving customer experience and maintain collaborative working relations across IT and non-IT departments

 

About the Department

The Hybrid Platforms team, part of the Platforms and Service Delivery directorate within IT Services, is responsible for on-premises server and storage hardware, backup, 1000+ virtual servers and the operating systems installed on them, Databases, and public cloud infrastructure in the near future. The team has a critical responsibility for the infrastructure the university relies on to provide a diverse range of services to staff and students both in the UK and abroad.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, permanent appointment, with an immediate start date. The starting salary will be Grade 6, in the range of £48,035 - £53,625 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
