Lecturer in Sports & Exercise Medicine

The William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) wishes to appoint a lecturer to complement its existing skills base of teaching in Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM). The successful candidate will have expertise in at last one area of sports and exercise medicine, sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy or sports science (eg exercise physiology, exercise as a health tool, biomechanics). The successful candidate will be comfortable developing and delivering teaching in multiple formats including lectures, small group tutorials, workshops and on-line learning, capable in creating and maintaining resource materials, supervising and assessing student learning activities, and participating in public engagement. We expect the successful candidate to be engaged in a relevant area of research. We are happy to consider a job share arrangement.

The successful candidate will work with the SEM and WHRI Education leads to contribute primarily to the development and delivery of teaching across post-graduate modules led by the WHRI. The main focus will be to coordinate aspects of the QMUL MSc / PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine, which is the longest-running postgraduate sports & exercise medicine course in Europe and/or our successful intercalated BSc in SEM. The successful candidate will work with the SEM team and module leads in developing and delivering module content to ensure that teaching is of a consistently high standard, assessment is appropriate, students are engaged and productive, and that career choice support is provided. There is a significant requirement for supervision of student research projects.

The MSc / PGDip can be studied full time in 1 year or part-time over 2-4 years. The curriculum covers core elements of Sports Injury Treatment, Sports Injury Rehabilitation, Exercise Physiology, Medical Problems in Sport Sports Injury Assessment and Research Methods. Optional modules and short courses are established in Sports Injury Management, Exercise as a Health Tool, Podiatry and Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology and Team Medicine, Football Medicine and Science, Dance Medicine and Military Sports Medicine. There will be scope for the development of new courses which reflect the evolving nature of the specialty, initiatives to which the post-holder would be expected to contribute.

More broadly, in collaboration with the WHRI education team, the role may also include institutional research aiming to critically appraise our teaching and to develop understanding of the subsequent career trajectories associated with the courses we offer providing an account of our contributions to the scientific and clinical economy and informing future teaching developments in sports and exercise medicine.

The continuation of the successful candidate’s existing research interests will be supported alongside student research supervision. The WHRI has particular strengths in SEM, education and three core WHRI research themes (cardiovascular, inflammation and endocrine; SEM has a particular interest in the link between movement and pathology, and has a fully equipped Human performance Laboratory. An appropriate balance of teaching, research and administration activities will be negotiated.

The role would suit a person skilled in one or more of the areas listed above who now desires new challenges for the application of acquired high level skills. The person would have demonstrable capability in teaching through prior engagement with educational activities in her/his career to date.

The post is full time and permanent. Job share will be considered. Starting salary will be in the range £40,182 - £42,431 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, defined-benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
