Overview:

About the Role

Our research in Paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis) aims to better understand the disease epidemiology and its complications. In addition to having the disease, children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are at risk of other severe and rare conditions, severe infections, liver failure and blood clots (in the legs/lungs or brain).

In this study, using the largest network of its kind with unique and comprehensive prospectively acquired clinical data to study both the incidence of disease and also examine underlying aetiologies using advanced statistical techniques. As children have less co-morbid disease than adults the likelihood of clear findings is enhanced. By confirming likely risk factors and aetiologies will allow targeted study of scientific pathophysiology of the complications in the future and increase the possibility of identifying management strategies to minimise further risks. This project will allow us to generate real estimates of risks for discussing with the families in the clinics. In addition, we will be able to agree and make available management plans to clinicians for the management of these complications.

Key areas of research include:

Study of epidemiology of paediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (PIBD)

Calculation of denominator population and incidence estimation of each rare complication in PIBD

Statistical analysis of rare complications and related risk factors

Understanding coverage of each site and expand total coverage of the study
