About the role
The School is seeking to develop and strengthen its international-renowned research activity as part of the School’s on-going investment in research excellence.
We have broad expertise across the School, with systems engineering and operational research approaches currently embedded across areas such as aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, renewable energy engineering, materials science, chemical engineering and robotics and control.
We are now seeking applicants who could strengthen our systems engineering activity, in a manner which complements and integrates with our existing research strengths.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area, in addition to a significant track record of internationally leading research achievement, demonstrated through a strong funding portfolio and refereed journal publications.
A commitment to the development of a high-quality student education is also essential, to develop and support our taught programmes across engineering and materials science.
Scientific leadership in their field and an ability to contribute to the strategic development of the School including mentoring junior colleagues is required.
About the School
The School of Engineering and Materials Science is based on the Mile End Campus and is home to over 75 academic staff and 40 professional services staff, with additional core staff associated with our Joint Educational Institute and Joint Research Institute with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi’an China.
With investment of over £35M in recent years, the school houses extensive state-of-the-art experimental facilities covering cell and tissue laboratories, chemistry labs, materials synthesis, testing and characterisation facilities, robotics and gait analysis facilities, wind tunnels, heat transfer laboratories, and design and workshop space. We also have a strong tradition and extensive activity in computational research, with access to a range of high performance computing facilities.

The post is based at the Mile End campus in London. It is a full time, permanent appointment with an expected start date of August 2021. The starting salary will be Professorial Off Scale, inclusive of London Allowance. A generous academic support package will also be available.
